Inspiration for 1920's costume ideas

A 1920's inspired outfit put together, influenced from
the photos above; for the female protagonist to wear.

Recce shots of our location

Over the weekend I took over 90 shots of our location; including short videos to demonstrate the panning effects. This was because we wanted the wrecking shots to help us complete our first draft of the storyboard and to help visualize everything.

Rough draft of Storyboard for film opening

Before we started our first neat draft of our storyboard, we did a rough plan of what we were going to include before we made and drew on all the detail. This is partly because we hadn't done the wrecking shots yet so we didn't have something clear to work from.

We didn't really include any colour on the storyboard because the film will be in black and white; and will only include a colour splash of red on the lips and the ring.

Ideas for our film's title

THE WRING

Our first idea was to call our film 'The Wring'. This
was because of the symbolic ruby ring that is shown throughout
the film; foreshadowing the female protagonist's death. But as
there is already a horror film called 'The Ring'. We thought spelling
wring with a 'w' would have a double meaning; the symbolic ring
and foreshadowing how she gets strangled later on (like 'wringing'
someone's neck)

The Dolly Zoom
a.k.a. Vertigo Effect, Zolly, Reverse Tracking Shot

The dolly zoom is a type of shot where the object in focus stays
the same size while the background elements grow or shrink.

Vertigo

Alfred Hitchcock's 1958 film 'Vertigo' was in fact the
first film to use dolly zoom.  Hitchcock himself implemented this
technique. This shot can be seen in the clip below at 0:33 and 0:50 seconds.

Jaws

My group are planning to use the dolly zoom in our film
opening to emphasis the significance and power of the ring.

In our coursework lesson we practiced using the dolly zoom
with a few different objects; a computer mouse, a chair,
gluestick and a cup. Although it wasn't up to Hitchcock's standard,
with a few practices and takes we were able to understand the basics
of how to master the dolly zoom. This was achieved by moving the camera
forwards while zooming out; or moving the camera backwards and zooming
in. We realised that to achieve the shot we had to move the camera faster
than the speed of zooming in or out.

Inspiration for our film opening

Our second idea for the narrative of our film opening- Mood board

  • A horror set in the present day at Hadlow Tower
  • Group of teenager girls are house sitting at the tower at night
  • They all sit and talk in the lounge
  • Girl goes off to get a drink/toilet
  • Other girls can see the lift start to move (girls are scared)
  • Lift opens and its empty/then closes (girls are relieved)
  • Then it opens again and the girl is in the lift and had been murdered
  • Then all the lights go out
  • The rest of the girls have to try and escape the tower but only one can survive
